What 18K means — and when it is the right choice
18K gold is 750 parts per thousand pure gold (75%). The remaining quarter is harder metals, which is exactly why jewellers love it for settings: prongs grip stones more securely than in softer 22K, and the metal resists daily knocks. The trade-off is value density — a gram of 18K holds three-quarters of the gold of a gram of 24K, and its price is always the 24K price × 18/24. Making charges on 18K — read the invoice carefully
Branded 18K pieces often carry much higher making charges than plain gold jewellery, and the charge is where the real price difference hides. Ask for the making charge per gram in writing, compare the same design across two or three shops, and make sure the invoice separates weight, karat, making charge and VAT (5% on the full invoice value for retail jewellery in the UAE).
