How the gold price in Egypt is calculated
The gold price in Egypt starts from the world market: the international price of one troy ounce of gold (31.1035 grams) in US dollars is divided by 31.1035 to get the price of one gram of pure 24 carat gold, multiplied by the carat ratio (for example 21/24 for 21 carat), and converted into Egyptian pounds at the daily US dollar exchange rate. Unlike the Gulf currencies, the Egyptian pound is not pegged to the dollar — it floats, and its rate changes from day to day. That means the gold rate in Egypt moves with two things at once: the world gold price and the dollar rate against the pound. The prices on this page are the raw gold value on that basis; gold shops (the “sagha”) then quote two close prices — a selling price you pay when you buy, and a buying price you receive when you sell — and add making charges on jewellery, with VAT calculated on the making charges under the applicable rules.
21 carat gold and the gold guinea — a short guide for expats
Egypt runs on 21 carat gold. It is the standard karat for Egyptian jewellery — harder than pure 24 carat, close to it in value — and it is also the karat of Egypt’s classic savings piece, the gold guinea (الجنيه الذهب), which weighs exactly 8 grams of 21 carat gold. At the sample rates used in the example below, one guinea’s raw gold value is about 47,171.55 EGP; shops may add a small premium for minting and packaging that varies by shop and brand. If you are used to thinking in tolas, one tola equals exactly 11.6638 grams, and the per-tola table above converts today’s Egypt rate into that unit as well. 24 carat in Egypt is mainly bought as bars for investment, and 18 carat is used for diamond and gemstone jewellery.
A quick example at sample rates: 10 grams of 21 carat jewellery at 5,896.44 EGP per gram comes to 58,964.40 EGP in gold value (at a world price of 4,000 dollars per ounce and a dollar rate of 52.40 pounds). Add illustrative making charges of 100 EGP per gram (1,000 EGP — an example figure only; actual making charges in Egypt vary widely by shop, design and whether the piece is local or imported), and the total is 59,964.40 EGP, before VAT, which is calculated on the making charges under the applicable rules. Use the live tables above to repeat this with today’s actual gold price in Egypt.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price in Egypt today?
Today’s gold price in Egypt is shown at the top of this page and updates automatically: the answer block lists the current price per gram for 24, 21 and 18 carat gold in Egyptian pounds and US dollars, plus the price of one gold ounce and one gold guinea. Gold trades around the clock on world markets and the pound’s dollar rate changes daily, so the rate can move several times a day.
What is today’s gold rate per gram in Egypt?
The per-gram table above shows today’s gold rate in Egypt for every carat in both EGP and USD. As a guide: 24 carat is pure gold (999), used for bars and investment; 21 carat is Egypt’s most traded karat, the standard for local jewellery and for the gold guinea; and 18 carat is used for diamond and gemstone jewellery.
How much is a gold guinea in Egypt today?
The gold guinea (الجنيه الذهب) weighs exactly 8 grams of 21 carat gold, so its raw value is simply the 21 carat gram price multiplied by 8 — about 47,171.55 EGP at the sample rates on this page (world gold at 4,000 dollars and the dollar at 52.40 pounds). The live guinea price is shown in the tables above. Shops may add a small premium above the raw gold value for minting and packaging, and that premium varies by shop and by brand.
Why does the gold price in Egypt move even when the world price is steady?
Because the price in pounds has two moving parts. The Egyptian pound floats against the US dollar, so when the dollar rate rises against the pound, gold in Egypt becomes more expensive in pounds even if the world gold price has not changed at all — and the reverse when the dollar rate falls. On top of that, local shops quote slightly different selling and buying prices around the raw value. This is the main difference from Gulf markets, where the currency is fixed to the dollar and only the world price matters.
Do the prices on this page include making charges and VAT?
No — the prices shown are the raw gold value, calculated from the world spot price at the daily dollar rate. When you buy jewellery in Egypt, the shop adds making charges, which vary widely by shop and design, and VAT is calculated on those making charges under the applicable rules. Gold bars and guineas carry much lower extra costs than jewellery, which is why they are preferred for pure saving and investment.
