Gold in Morocco — what to know
Casablanca is the largest market, with gold kissariats in the Habous quarter, Derb Omar and the old medina, and further souks in Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier. The key local fact for visitors: Moroccan jewellery is 18K (750) by law and custom, following the European karat tradition — not the 21K of the Gulf and Levant — and shop prices for new jewellery sit noticeably above the raw spot-derived gram price, because workmanship and a local retail premium are added on top. We publish no official workmanship figure because none exists; our Arabic checker page splits any shop quote into raw value versus additions so you can compare jewellers yourself. Tiznit in the south is Morocco’s silver capital, famous for traditional Amazigh silver jewellery.
The Arabic Morocco section
Every Morocco page also exists in Arabic with the full toolset: the flagship 18K (750) page, 24K, silver, bullion and the ounce, a gold calculator with unit converter and portfolio tracker, a zakat calculator, a price checker explaining the local premium, and a sell calculator for used gold: أسعار الذهب في المغرب بالعربية
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gold price in Morocco today?
Live Morocco prices are in the table above: gram prices for 18K, 21K and 24K in Moroccan dirhams and US dollars, updated with the world spot price and the daily dirham rate. When this page was built, 18K — Morocco’s standard — was about MAD 988.87 per gram and 24K about MAD 1,318.49 at a spot price of $4,205.40 per ounce and 9.7516 dirhams per dollar. These are raw metal values before workmanship and shop premium.
What does ‘750 gold’ mean in Morocco?
It is the hallmark number for 18K: 750 parts per thousand (75%) pure gold. Morocco follows the European tradition, so 18K/750 is the legal and popular standard for jewellery — harder than 21K, better for stone settings, and the karat every Moroccan jeweller quotes first. When Moroccans ask for ‘thaman ad-dahab’ (the price of gold), they almost always mean the 750 gram.
Why are shop prices in Morocco so much higher than the spot gram price?
Because a shop’s price for new jewellery adds three things on top of the raw metal value: real workmanship (much Moroccan jewellery is handmade, and imported pieces carry their own costs), the shop’s margin, and a customary local premium on new jewellery. There is no official fixed workmanship rate in Morocco, so the honest way to judge a quote is to compute the raw value — as this site does — and compare the addition per gram between two or three jewellers for a similar piece.
How are the dirham prices calculated?
We take the world spot price in US dollars and convert it at the daily market rate for the Moroccan dirham, which floats in a managed band set by Bank Al-Maghrib — it is not pegged. That is why Moroccan gold prices can move even on a day when world gold is flat, if the dirham itself moved. All tables update automatically with both inputs.
Where do people buy gold in Morocco?
In the kissariats (covered jewellery markets) of the big cities — Casablanca’s Habous and old medina quarters are the largest — and in jewellers across Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier. Always buy with an official invoice showing weight, karat and price, and check the 750 hallmark on jewellery; for investment, buy sealed stamped bars from a recognised dealer so resale is easy.
